If Stefan *truly* loved Elena the way that he has always claimed to, he would have never been willing to have those memories erased, regardless of how much he was hurting. Remember, in season 3, Damon offered to compel Elena so that she wouldn’t remember all the hurtful things Stefan had done, but she refused, insisting that she needed to remember it- all of it. That’s what love is. It’s taking the good with the bad. Sadly, Stefan’s character is far too selfish and emotionally immature to handle that. 

Where Damon was able to step back and give his brother the spotlight time and time again, not just with Elena, but even with their own father… where he was able to gracefully bow out of the race at the end of season 3 when Elena chose Stefan, and yet still be there for her throughout her transition [[because at the end of the day, he just wants Elena to be happy regardless of who she chose…]] Stefan can’t do that. This is primarily because Stefan is self-serving. At the root of almost everything he does, there is an underlying self-serving motive. Most recently: he wants the cure because he’s desperate to believe that if Elena is no longer a vampire that she will go back to being the dutiful, doe-eyed girlfriend that she once was; like it will somehow rewind time and she will magically “un-feel” all of the things she feels for Damon. Sorry, not sorry… that’s not how love works; and everyone who has paid attention to the development of DE over the past 4 seasons knows that Elena’s feelings for Damon began long before her becoming a vampire. Stefan knows that, he’s just unwilling to accept the reality of the situation: Elena is in love with his brother. For once in his life, someone chose Damon over him.
